Types of financial aid available at UCR:

There are two types of financial aid: gift-aid and self-help aid. Students may be awarded a financial aid package including a combination of these. Gift-aid includes grants and scholarships which do not have to be repaid or earned. Self-help aid includes loans which must be repaid and work-study funds which must be earned.


Grants

Grants are gift aid awarded on the basis of financial need which do not require repayment. In general, grants are awarded to students with the highest demonstrated financial need. Grant funds are provided by the federal government, the State of California, and UCR.

Scholarships

Scholarships are gift aid awarded on the basis of merit, academic achievement, athletic ability, or special talents. Scholarships do not have to be repaid. Sources of scholarship funds include UCR and outside agencies.

Loans

Loans are funds that you borrow which must be repaid. Loan funds are provided by the federal government, UCR, and private lenders through alternative loan programs.

Student Employment

Work opportunities in on campus and off campus community service positions are available through the Federal Work Study program. Job placement is coordinated by the Career Services Office.

Other Resources

Financial aid is available from a variety of other sources, including outside scholarship donors, some academic departments, the military, and some private organizations.
