Student employment

A variety of work opportunities are available through the UCR Career Services Center in either on campus jobs or off campus jobs at non-profit and community service agencies. Federal Work-Study is awarded to qualifying undergraduate students with the highest financial need. Most students awarded Federal-Work Study in their first year will receive a renewal award the subsequent year if they had Work-Study earnings in the year that they are offered Federal Work-Study. Students who accept Federal-Work Study offers but who do not actually have earnings (i.e., who do not work in a Work-Study position) will not be offered a renewal Work-Study award the following year. Job placement listings are also available for non Work-Study positions for students who do not have Federal Work-Study awards or who do not qualify for financial aid.

Federal Work-Study is a federally funded program that provides employment opportunities for students while enrolled in school. Students who participate in Federal Work-Study earn a monthly paycheck, which can be used to pay for educational expenses, and at the same time gain valuable work experience which can be an important asset when applying for employment opportunities after graduation. Federal funds pay a percentage of the hourly wage, with the employer contributing the balance. Hourly rates comply with minimum wage laws and vary with the type of work performed. Hourly rates at UCR ranged between $8.00 and $15.00 per hour in 2007-08. Students select from job listings which interest them and establish their work schedules with their employers. Federal Work-Study is awarded to students based on financial need and the availability of funds.

Students who are not eligible for financial aid may be interested in applying for part-time positions on or off campus. Contact Student Employment in the Career Services Center, Veitch Student Center or via their website. Students who are interested in positions as tutors, school aides or substitute teachers should also contact the Office of Educational Career Services, Veitch Student Center.
