Solutions for Money Emergencies

If you have a money emergency, don’t panic – we can help! Learn about financial safety nets you have at UCR.

You could also be eligible for more financial aid. Cover lost/reduced income, a catastrophic event, school-related expenses, child care and more!


You can get an emergency loan.

  • You can get a $500 interest-free emergency loan three times per year. Fees must be current and repayment is due in 30 days or at the end of the quarter (whichever comes first). Contact us for details.

  • You can borrow up to $1000 with no interest with the Henry Ramsey Jr. Emergency Loan. Fees must be current and repayment is due within 30 days or at the end of the quarter (whichever comes first). Learn more or call  (951) 827-2586 for details.

  • Faculty and staff are also eligible for emergency loans. Learn more.


You can get a budget increase. Funded by loans, budget increases are considered on a case-by-case basis. Request one when you have a big expense such as:

  • A computer purchase

  • A car repair (not covered by insurance)

  • Medical/dental/optical costs


To request a budget increase, please complete the Budget Increase Request form.

  • You can get a budget increase for child care expenses.

    • Funded by loans, budget increases are considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • To request a budget increase for child care expenses, please print the Child Care Verification Form, complete it with your child care provider and submit it to our office.

  • Your child can attend UCR’s Child Development Center.


You can pay your tuition in installments.

Pay tuition and fees (not covered by grants, scholarships, waivers or loans) in three monthly installments each quarter with a Deferred Payment Plan (DPP).  There is a $25 per quarter processing fee. DPP is not available for UCR Extension.

You can request a re-evaluation of your financial aid eligibility.

If your family has experienced a significant loss in income, you may be eligible to request a re-evaluation of your financial aid eligibility. You must have already submitted a FAFSA and have been awarded financial aid. Contact the Office of Financial Aid to request for a re-evaluation.

The UCR case managers are the best people to help you find emergency food assistance.

You can also check out special UCR and off-campus programs that offer free food, low-cost food and money for food.


You may be eligible for an emergency grant.


You may qualify for a free emergency grant through The Kalyn Smith-Tranquil'son Memorial Fund.

If you have extremely limited resources, you may qualify for a reduced GRE fee.

You may become eligible for aid again if you show us paperwork that confirms you are now paying your loan back.
